About Santa Fe

Santa Fe is situated at the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains at the highest altitude of

any U.S. state capital, with an elevation of 6,998 feet. Founded in 1610, it is the oldest state

capital in the United States and the oldest European settlement west of the Mississippi. First a

small Pueblo Indian settlement, Santa Fe was designated a colonial capital by the Spanish in

1610. Not until the mid-1800's did the first Anglo settlers arrive from the east. Since then the

three cultures have simultaneously mingled and yet kept their individual identities.

Originally inhabited by indigenous Pueblo people, the city served as a Spanish colonial capital,

a Mexican provincial capital, and finally a U.S. territorial and state capital, creating a unique

"City Different" blend of cultures renowned for its art, architecture and cuisine.

Where to stay?

We have a room block set up at the Inn of the Governors but there are a dozen or more great options within walking distance of the ceremony and reception:

  • We have had multiple great experiences at the Inn and Spa at Loretto (adjacent to our ceremony) and at Hotel Chimayo (less than 5 min walk from ceremony and reception)

  • Downtown Santa Fe is extremely walkable - if you are close to the plaza then you are close to our events. Here are other recommendations:

    • Hotel St. Francis (great cocktail bar & did some of our engagement shoot here)

    • La Fonda (on the plaza and between our ceremony and reception)

    • The Eldorado

    • La Posada

    • Inn of the Anasazi

Recommended Eats

Shed - great for breakfast/brunch

Tia Sophia’s - think big breakfast burritos

Tomasito’s - even if just for their sopaipillas

Cafe Pasqual’s - popular spot, sometimes long waits

The Pink Adobe - a favorite of ours; white table clothes, would require reservation

Coyote Cafe - hip, upscale dinner spot; would require reservation

Rooftop Cantina at the Coyote Cafe - more casual, rooftop bar with eats

Restaurant Martin - awesome food, near downtown; would require reservation

Geronimo - for our ‘foodies’, fine-dining destination

Recommended Cocktail Lounges and Bars

Friendly reminder of the altitude (roughly 7k ft) and to drink plenty of water

  • The Margarita trail goes all through the town and though you cannot go wrong, with most notable locations having their own signature drink, we have some favorites

  • The Dragon Room - this is our favorite bar in Santa Fe; a smaller, more intimate spot that was a frequent haunt for Georgia O’Keefe and Robert Redford

  • Secreto Lounge - our favorite margarita on the trail/in town

  • Joe’s Tequila Bar - another favorite and a great stop on the way to Canyon Road with an extensive list of, you guessed it, tequila and mezcal cocktails

  • Tumbleroot Pottery Pub - you can have a drink and play with some clay right at your table

  • Santa Fe Brewing - for a big brewery experience

  • Rooftop at La Fonda - one of the few rooftop bars in town and right on the plaza

  • Del Charro - think big margaritas; one margarita is more like one and a half!

  • Matador - small, underground dive bar; cash only

  • Evangelo’s - Dive bar, might be cash only

Recommended things to do

  • Canyon Road Art District - a full road of galleries filled with all kinds of art; also a handful of cafes/bars scattered throughout for a pit stop

  • Santa Fe Plaza - native artists selling authentic silver and turquoise jewelry

  • New Mexico Museum of Art (along with several other art museums including the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts)

  • The original Meow Wolf - immersive art experience now with locations in Las Vegas, Denver, and soon in Los Angeles

  • Kowboyz - vintage western attire and boots, new and used; big vintage shopping scene in Santa Fe. Double Take is another great one

  • Seret & Sons - renowned rug, furniture, & design store known for its vast collection of unique, imported, and artisan-crafted furnishings, textiles, and architectural elements
